'Hidden' Strava Features to Amp the Group Experience

Everybody knows that Strava users enjoy a wealth of statistics and features. But while some are obvious, there are others that might be a little harder to find. In this article, we'll uncover a few Strava features that can help improve the overall group experience.

The Kudos Bomb

Have you ever organized a group activity and scrolled through your feed giving kudos to everyone who took part? Well, dropping a kudos bomb does exactly the same thing - and it takes a matter of seconds.

Kudos Bombs allow you to bestow kudos on groups of up to 50 people with a simple shake of the phone. All you need to do is:

1. On your phone, click on a Group Activity once it is completed.

2. Click Manage Group.

3. Shake your phone.

That's it. With that simple shake you will have dropped a kudos bomb on all of the members of the group who completed the activity.

Warning! There is a limit to how many kudos bombs you can drop in a month, so don't shake that phone too often!!

Strava Flyby

Strava Flyby is a pretty cool tool brought to you by Strava Labs. Flyby allows you to play your activity back, and see who you 'flew' past - or who flew past you. In short, if you're organizing a group race or meet-up, it's a great way to see how everyone performed on a map and timeline.

Enabling Flyby on Web

1. On the website, go to your Settings (in the top right when you hover over your profile image).

2. Click on the 'Privacy Controls'.

3. Select 'Everyone' or 'No One' under 'Flybys.' Note: If you wish to view Flyby you need to select Everyone.

Enabling Flyby on the Mobile App

1. On the mobile app, go to your settings.

2. Select 'Privacy Controls' on the next page.

3. Select 'Flybys' to choose between 'Everyone' or 'No One.' Note: If you wish to view Flyby you need to select Everyone.

How to view Strava Flyby

Once you have enabled Flyby on your profile, you can view it on each activity you have completed. All you need to do is:

1. On the website click into an activity after February 26 2024. Note: prior to February 26 2024 Flyby will only show your own activity.

2. Click on the 'View Flybys' button.

3. On the web page that opens on the screen, make sure that all of the names of the athletes that appear are checked.

4. Click play (you can also adjust playback speed using the arrows).

It is also possible to use Strava Flyby directly in the Strava Lab. On the Flyby page enter the URL or activity number of the activity you wish to view a Flyby from. For instance:

  • The URL may appear like this: https://www.strava.com/activities/0123456789

  • The activity number would simply be: 0123456789

But remember: Strava Flyby only works when people have enabled it in their settings, and for activities recorded after February 6th 2024.

Route Completion Times

If you're planning a route for your community, but aren't too familiar with the area, Strava offers a range of tools to help you determine whether you've gone too hard - or too easy - on your group.

Once you have created your route (or found one that looks interesting), Strava will provide additional information about it, including:

  • What times of year the route is popular

  • What times of day the route is popular

  • The range of community completion times.

Accessing this information is very easy. On the mobile app all you need to do is:

1. Go to the Maps tab.

2. Navigate to your Saved Routes by tapping the button in the top right of the screen.

3. Select the route you are interested in.

4. Scroll down on the information card to see the information about that route. For more information on how this information is calculated, click here.
